We welcomed the Nā Koa Aliʻi Hawaiʻi All State Band at Bandfest 2023! This is a Tournament of Roses event showcasing all of the marching bands that will be participating in the Rose Parade. This was a special performance as this year is Nā Koa Aliʻi’s first time back to Pasadena since their COVID-19 hiatus as well as having Lahāina residents as band members. As the fires are still fresh in their minds, our small welcome performance spoke of hope, home and an honoring of Maui and all her splendor. Maui strong!

What an incredible, moving and memorable week. Kumu Nani and Poʻo Puaʻa Kainani were invited to participate in the welcome ceremony to bring in the waʻa Hōkūleʻa into port in Marina Del Rey for this leg of her Moananuiākea journey. Sailing her way down the West Coast all the way from Alaska, this is the first time she has been to California for 28 years. After this welcome, we brought the hālau to tour the waʻa and get to know, in a small way, one of the most iconic pieces of Hawaiian history revival. We closed out the week with a performance at the mini-festival celebrating her presence in Southern California. In addition to our papa hula, our Papa ʻUkulele was entertaining the tour lines waiting to board the waʻa and was given an impromptu hana hou on stage. These were the experiences of a lifetime – who knows the next time Hōkūleʻa will come into port in California again.

Hōʻike 2022 is in the books! After a two year hiatus, it was wonderful being able to gather as a hālau on the stage and present our gift of hula to our ʻohana and friends. We had three years’ worth of new classes that had never experienced a full blown Hōʻike! Seeing them experience it all for the first time was truly a joy and we had a blast both backstage and performing. Mahalo to everyone that came out to support – we couldn’t do any of this without you. Already looking forward to E Hula Kākou 2023!

Hōʻike is coming up on June 11th 2022!! We will finally be back with our annual recital to showcase what we have accomplished over the past two years. Going through a majority of 2020 and 2021 via Zoom and missing both Hōʻike, we are antsy to get back on the stage. For our graduating classes for both years, this will be their first public performance! For those of you interested in joining, this is a wonderful way to see how our productions come to fruition. Please head over to the event page for additional information and ticket requests!
